FIRST LIGHT CREATIONS

MEET THE FOUNDER
ALEX THIBODEAU
Creator • Storyteller • Maker
It began with a dream.
What started as an idea slowly became an expanding universe of stories, artifacts, creations, and possibilities.
01 // ORIGIN
IT BEGAN WITH A DREAM.
Not a dream of starting a business. A dream of something much bigger.
First Light didn't begin with a 3D printer, a product, or even the idea of creating a business.
It began with a dream.
In that dream, I imagined a cosmic entity — something ancient and powerful, existing far beyond the boundaries of an ordinary human life.
That single image stayed with me long after I woke up.
I started wondering who this entity was. Where did it come from? What had it witnessed? What would it mean to experience the universe through the eyes of something that could exist across unimaginable stretches of time?
One question became another.
And then came the endless "what if..." moments.
Somewhere along the way, that dream became First Light.
What began as the story of one cosmic entity slowly grew into something much larger — an expanding universe filled with civilizations, mysteries, artifacts, conflicts, and stories waiting to be discovered.
At the time, it existed entirely in my imagination.
I had no idea that eventually I would discover something that would allow me to take pieces of that imaginary universe and actually hold them in my hands.
That part of the story would come later.
02 // SERVICE
TWENTY YEARS OF SERVICE.
Long before First Light Creations, another journey was already shaping the person behind it.
Before First Light Creations became a reality, I spent twenty years serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Those years took me far beyond home and gave me experiences that would stay with me long after each deployment ended.
During my career, I deployed overseas three times — each mission completely different from the one before it.
HAITI
Deployed following the devastating 2010 earthquake, supporting the international response during a time of extraordinary destruction and human need.
AFGHANISTAN
A second overseas deployment followed in 2011, taking me to Afghanistan and adding another chapter to a military career that had already taken me far beyond anything I could have imagined when I first joined.
KUWAIT
My third overseas deployment brought me to Kuwait as part of Operation IMPACT.
Military service taught me discipline, patience, attention to detail, problem solving, and perhaps most importantly, perseverance.
I didn't know it at the time, but years later those same qualities would become an important part of designing, experimenting, failing, rebuilding, and creating something entirely my own.
The soldier would eventually become the maker.
03 // DISCOVERY
FROM IMAGINATION
TO REALITY.
Then I discovered 3D printing. And suddenly, imagination had no reason to remain imaginary.
For the first time, an idea didn't have to end as an image in my head.
I could actually make it.What began as curiosity quickly became something much more.
I became fascinated by the idea that a machine sitting in my home could take something that existed only as a digital design and slowly build it into a physical object — one layer at a time.
Naturally, I started experimenting.
I printed things. I learned. I made mistakes. I changed settings. I tried again.
Some prints worked beautifully. Others definitely did not.
There may have been a few spectacular failures along the way.
But every failed print taught me something. Every successful print opened another possibility. And before long, I wasn't simply interested in what a 3D printer could make.
I started thinking about what I could create with it.
And then I realized something.
I already had an entire universe waiting to be explored.
What if I could bring pieces of First Light into the real world?
The stories no longer had to exist only on a page.
The artifacts didn't have to exist only in my imagination.
For the first time, I had a way to give this universe a physical form.
Storytelling had found its machine.
04 // CREATION
WHEN TWO WORLDS BECAME ONE.
The story was already alive. Now I finally had a way to give it form.
Once I began looking at 3D printing differently, everything changed.
It was no longer just about printing objects. It became a way to take ideas from the First Light universe and begin translating them into something real.
A shape could become an artifact. A creature could become a collectible. A simple functional object could become something that felt like it had come from another place entirely.
That was the moment the two worlds finally met.
Characters, ideas, mysteries, artifacts and an ever-expanding universe.
Design, experimentation, craftsmanship and physical creation.
FIRST LIGHT CREATIONS
A place where storytelling and 3D printing could exist together.
From that point on, every new idea began to carry two questions.
What story does this belong to?
And how can I bring it into the real world?
That approach became the foundation of First Light Creations.
Some creations are directly connected to the larger universe. Others begin simply as something fun, useful, unusual, or interesting to make.
But everything starts in the same place: with an idea and the desire to turn it into something you can actually hold.
I don't want First Light Creations to feel like a collection of random objects.
I want every new piece to feel like another small discovery.
Something created here.
But imagined somewhere much farther away.
The universe continues to grow.
New ideas continue to become designs. Designs continue to become physical creations. And every once in a while, another piece of the larger story finds its way into the real world.
First Light was no longer just a story. It had become something I could build.
05 // THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
First Light Creations is still growing, changing, and discovering what it can become.
Today, First Light Creations continues to evolve one idea, one design, and one creation at a time.
Some ideas begin as part of the larger First Light universe. Others begin simply because I wonder if something unusual, useful, or fun can be made.
Sometimes the story inspires the creation. Sometimes the creation inspires the story.
That back-and-forth has become one of my favorite parts of building this world.
There are still stories I have not told.
Creations I have not built.
Places in the First Light universe that have not yet been explored.
And that is exactly how I want it.If you have purchased something I have made, followed the story, explored the Archive, shared one of my creations, or simply spent a few minutes discovering this strange little universe I have been building...
Thank you.
Every person who becomes part of First Light helps this journey continue a little farther.
Every creation begins as an idea. Every idea becomes a design. Every design becomes an artifact. And every artifact becomes part of the story.
Thank you for helping write the next chapter.
